This project was launched in 2023 to engage with people affected by and living with cancer in the Torbay area and highlight where positive changes can be made.
The Macmillan Torbay Community Engagement Project is a place-based and integrated approach to engaging with people, which aims to understand more about health inequalities experienced in relation to cancer, and to co-produce solutions alongside Torbay communities.
Funded by Macmillan Cancer Support and working in partnership with independent non-profit organisation Engaging Communities South West and Torbay Communities, the project will run for two years.
Over the two years the project will be listening to local communities affected by cancer to understand more about the barriers to diagnosis, issues with support through treatment, and managing the impacts of cancer in Torbay.
The project will also work alongside residents and Torbay community organisations to co-produce community-based interventions to improve access to information and support for those affected by and living with cancer in Torbay.
The project will take a phased implementation approach; year one will focus on engagement with local
communities. Year two will focus on asset-based community development work, to co-produce solutions with the community to the issues identified in year one.
The project will:
- carry out engagement with Torbay residents affected by cancer. Emphasis will be placed on engaging with communities which are known to experience health inequalities in relation to cancer.
- Help to develop a better understanding of local needs and issues in relation to cancer.
- Co-produce interventions with local communities to improve access to information and support for those affected by and living with cancer in Torbay.
- Collaborate with other organisations and individuals involved in community engagement and development locally.
