Macmillan (Phase 2) – The Open Door Project
Developing community cancer support shaped by lived experience
Macmillan Phase 2 builds on the earlier Macmillan Torbay Community Engagement Project, which listened to people living with or affected by cancer in Torbay.
That first phase identified clear gaps in accessible cancer information, community-based support, post-treatment support and peer support. It also showed the need for stronger, ongoing relationships with people and communities who experience health inequalities.
This new 18-month project moves from listening into action – testing practical, community-based ways to improve access to cancer information and support in Torbay.
What the project will do
- Bring together people with lived experience, professionals and local partners through a new Advisory Panel
- Work with people living with or affected by cancer to co-design support
- Develop and test a community-based Cancer Peer Support Network
- Improve access to accessible cancer awareness information
- Explore how cancer support can be delivered closer to where people live
- Work with partners to identify longer-term options for sustainability.
What we hope to achieve
- A tested model for a community-based Cancer Peer Support Network in Torbay
- More accessible cancer information for people who may face barriers
- Stronger links between community settings, health services and local support
- Better understanding of how peer support can help people before, during and after cancer treatment
- Practical learning to support future cancer support in Torbay.
